Hannum Elementary School Physical Education Teacher Mike Fanjoy recently received the Chicago Bears Classroom Legend Award. This recognition honors educators who go above and beyond for their students and schools.
“Mike Fanjoy consistently goes above and beyond to create an inclusive and engaging environment where every student has the opportunity to succeed,” Hannum Principal Meagan Doornbos said. “His dedication to student development, both physically and mentally, shows a true commitment to teaching and positive impact. This award is a well-deserved recognition of Mr. Fanjoy's hard work and the lasting influence he has on our Hannum Bears.”
On Monday, November 4, the whole school gathered in the gym for a memorable event honoring Mr. Fanjoy. Adding to the excitement, Chicago Bears Chairperson George McCaskey and former Bears Offensive Lineman Steve Edwards made a special appearance to present the award, making the celebration truly unforgettable for Mr. Fanjoy, the students, and all staff members.
Dan Lazzarotto, a PE teacher at Hannum and a friend of Mr. Fanjoy, played a key role in organizing the assembly. His careful planning ensured the award presentation remained a heartfelt and unforgettable surprise.
“Mike Fanjoy is incredibly deserving of this award,” Mr. Lazzarotto said. “He is always on the lookout for ways to get new equipment for our school. This truly benefits all of our students and helps them to find physical activities they really enjoy. It has always been easy to work with Mike. We want our students to think back on their time at Hannum school, and remember all of the fun things their P.E. teachers taught them. I think the kids see how much fun Mr. Fanjoy and I have teaching them, and it really helps our classroom environment.”
The Chicago Bears gave Mr. Fanjoy a Swag Bag, a check for $1,000 to use towards Hannum students, a personalized jersey and football, two tickets to the November 10 game, and field access before the game.
Overwhelmed with gratitude, Mr. Fanjoy was celebrated by his wife, children, family, and the entire Hannum School community for this well-deserved recognition.
“It's an amazing feeling to receive recognition for the work we do as teachers, and I'm fortunate enough to have a coworker, school, and community that trusts its teachers to create unique learning experiences for the students we teach,” Mr. Fanjoy said.
