Transformed Media Centers Prepare Today’s Learners for Tomorrow’s World

Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 continued the district wide media center renovation project with the recently remodeled Covington and Hannum school libraries. These renovated spaces provide excellent learning and collaboration opportunities for students to succeed both in and out of the classroom.

Covington’s media center has been operating for about two months and students are loving the space. A wood carving station provides students with the opportunity to create future captivating projects and participate in hands-on STEM learning.

Hannum’s library opened its doors to eager students in late October, revealing the renovated space with conference rooms for collaboration and flexible seating for independent reading. Students couldn’t be more thrilled to check out their first book from the new library and discover all the new things they can learn.

“Thank you to the media specialists who spent the time to get these wonderful libraries ready for students and for creating a comfortable space with endless learning possibilities,” Superintendent Paul Enderle said.

As part of the plan to renovate all of the district’s libraries, the next media centers to get the new look will be Kolmar and Sward.

Previously, the Hometown Elementary and Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School media centers were remodeled to allow students more access to STEM and creative projects. Last year, the OLHMS library was one of six Illinois school libraries to be recognized by the Association of Illinois School Library Educators (AISLE) with the Exemplary School Library Award.

Most recently, the OLHMS Media Center Renovation project was recognized by the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) and featured as one of 21 projects statewide at the 2023 Joint Annual Conference of IASB / Illinois Association of School Administrators (IASA) / Illinois Association of School Business Officials (IASBO).
