D123 Unites for International Celebration Night

The D123 English Learner team welcomed families for an International Celebration Night on May 9 at Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School.

Superintendent Dr. Paul Enderle and Director of the English Learner Program Dr. Patricia Gonzalez opened the event with their opening remarks, and Gonzalez recited a poem about the beauty of diversity. After an International Flag Parade, several groups performed a variety of dance numbers.

OLHMS 7th and 8th-grade students performed various Mexican dances and an Italian mambo. The Palestinian American Club performed the Palestinian Dabke and the Blackbird Irish dancers performed several traditional Irish dance numbers. Chris Nasadowski performed a Hip Hop movement, and D123 music teacher Nicky Glikis and her guests performed a Greek Dance.  For the grand finale, attendees were treated to Mariachi from Mariachi Perla as they tried delicacies from around the world.

Dishes included grape leaves from Lebanon, Falafel and baked goods from Palestine, Spring rolls from Vietnam, Jollof rice from Nigeria, Couscous from Morocco, Tamales and Pozole from Mexico, and countless other sides.

“The effort in planning, volunteering, and execution was truly an awe-inspiring experience for everyone,” Gonzalez said. “It was extraordinary to see the community come out and share in each other's diverse cultural entertainment and food experiences.”
