The Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School paid tribute to local veterans with its annual Veterans Day Assembly on Friday, Nov. 3, 2023. Staff, students, and community members gathered in the OLHMS gymnasium to honor the Veterans and their sacrifice and service to our country.
The Richards High School NJROTC started the assembly with the presentation and posting of colors. A current Air Force Chief, the Mayor of Oak Lawn, and a community leader gave speeches to the full crowd wearing red, white, and blue.
Additionally, the 6th grade Sunrise Singers joined with the 7th-8th grade chorus to perform the “Armed Forces Salute.” The OLHMS Concert Band performed an arrangement called “American Collage.”
Students also read the names of the veterans in attendance as well as those no longer with us. A couple of students read poems, including “Table of the Fallen Soldier,” explaining the symbolism of the table displayed.
To conclude the program, a retired Lieutenant Colonel performed “Taps,” a bugle call signaling “lights out” at the end of the military day.
