Students from Heather McCarthy’s class at Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School had the chance to participate in a celebration of young people committed to making a difference. WE Schools is the yearlong program that nurtures compassion in young people and gives them the tools to create change in their local and global communities.

Their participation caught the eye of KPMG, a group of big businesses, who sent our classroom a free box of books and then came to our classroom to tape our literacy campaign. WE Charity flew in from Canada and KPMG flew in from New York just to see the students.

“This video footage ended up in the hands of Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernandez (KPMG Literacy Advocate) who used some of our video footage at the WE Day celebration at the All-State Arena where over 15,000 participants got to see OLHMS on the big screen! Laurie Hernandez also gave us a shoutout on her Instagram Account,” said McCarthy.

Students from OLHMS also participated in the WE Day celebration at All State Arena. The WE Day program is about shifting the mindset from “me to we” and that “doing good is doable”. Check out the WE Day video below featuring OLHMS students!
