Welcome Mustangs

OLHMS service Day!

On Friday, April 25th, in honor of District 123’s Service Day, Sward Elementary School  welcomed student volunteers from Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School (OLHMS) and seniors from St. Rita of Cascia High School both Mustangs.

With picture books in hand and smiles that lit up the classrooms, the volunteers immersed themselves in storytelling, interactive discussions, and even engaging games. Classrooms buzzed with excitement as older students read aloud and led fun activities—Tic Tac Toe being a clear crowd favorite.

St. Rita seniors participated with heartfelt enthusiasm, many reflecting on the nostalgia of elementary school days. “Giving back through reading was really meaningful,” said Joe K., a senior at St. Rita. “It reminded me of when I was younger and how much those moments meant to me.”

OLHMS students were especially delighted to return to their former school. “It was so nice to see my old teacher again—it really felt like coming home,” shared one seventh-grade volunteer.

“Our students were thrilled to have older peers read to them, and Tic Tac Toe was a hit,” added Mrs. Jensen, a Sward teacher.

The staff at Sward expressed sincere gratitude to all the volunteers, noting the positive energy they brought into the building. “Thank you, OLHMS and St. Rita students,” said Mrs. Amra “Please come back—you’re welcome anytime!”
