The 5th graders in Ms. Lettiere's class completed a biography research project last month honoring famous African Americans for Black History Month. Ms. Lettiere provided students with a choice of about 50 famous African Americans to research, some of these famous people were still alive and students had interest in learning more about them or maybe they had no idea who the person was and wanted to investigate further. Ms. Lettiere reported that "during Guided Reading stations in my classroom, we took the time when they were with me to research their person for Black History Month, once the students heavily researched the person by watching videos, reading books, and searching the web, they created a pennant that included different sections such as: all about me, a famous quote, a pivotal moment in the person's life, challenges and obstacles their person had along their way, and lastly students had to think of 2 adjectives that described the person, and explain why." After students gathered all the information the students started to build the pennant, which included a picture of the person. The 5th grade students loved borrowing, Art Teacher, Mrs. Lee's multi-cultural crayons to color the person they chose for their research. The students did a fabulous job on this assignment and their work is proudly displayed in the hallway for all to learn about these important figures.
