On Thursday, April 14th, 1st graders at Sward enjoyed a fun afternoon with a concluding activity for a fairy tale unit they had been studying that had them working very hard! Over the past week and a half, students had heard a variety of different versions of the Three Little Pigs. Oh YES, you'd be surprised how many fractured fairy tales versions there are about the Three Little Pigs. Students were challenged with a STEM activity that had them using their creativity and engineering skills to construct a house that couldn't be blown down by the "Big Bad Blowdryer Wolf". Students were provided with candy gumdrops and toothpicks and given just the instructions to build a house for their pig that could withstand the huffing and puffing of the Big Bad Blowdryer Wolf. Students had a blast with this knowing that they had to have solid construction so that their house wouldn't blow down like in the story. Take a look for yourself at how creative the students were in their house designs!
