District 123 Board of Education Receives State Award

The Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 Board of Education is one of only 19 school districts statewide to earn the Illinois Association of School Boards 2019 School Board Governance Recognition designation. The honor is designed to acknowledge those school boards that have engaged in activities and modeled behaviors that lead to excellence in the local school governance in support of quality public education.
“Having once again been recognized with the IASB School Board Governance Award, we are proud of our enduring dedication to promoting the processes, transparency, monitoring, and commitment to the ongoing education of which this award is reflective. Our duty to manage the assets of our community as responsibly as possible necessitates that we leverage the resources provided by our state association to ensure that our decision-making process is continually reflective of the most current practices and information. Maintaining the trust of our families, staff, and community members as we execute this duty is of paramount importance to our work, and we want this award to be shared by all as a reflection of how much we value and are humbled by this confidence,” said Board President, Brian Nichols.
The District 123 Board received a formal presentation of this recognition at the Fall South Cook Division Meeting in November. District 123 last received this honor in 2015 from IASB, the District has also been recognized by IASB for their fiscal responsibility and transparency.
“We are honored that the D123 Board has been recognized with the School Board Governance Award again this year and that each Board Member has achieved Master Board Member status with the Illinois Association of School Boards. This recognition demonstrates our members’ ongoing commitment to continuous improvement. We do not take our role as Board Members lightly, nor our obligations to the Oak Lawn Hometown communities. We take advantage of the information and the tools provided by IASB to prepare us for the hard decisions we make month after month. We know that the teachers, staff, and administration work hard every day for the benefit of our students and their families, and we are dedicated to supporting their commitment, as well as demonstrating our commitment to lifelong learning,” said Board Vice President, Theresa Roche.
Most recently the Oak Lawn-Hometown District 123 Board of Education has been praised for the efforts in developing and approving a new strategic plan for the district. The plan is broken down into four goals for the district; Whole Child Success, Active Learning, Operational Excellence, and Community Spirit. The board began work on the plan during the 2018-2019 school year and approved the plan in March 2019. A new plan provides a new layout of learning for the next five years in District 123 ensuring our students are the most engaged, and enthusiastic 21st-century learners.
