At OLHMS, learning goes beyond textbooks and lectures. Recently, Media Specialist Heather McCarthy, alongside 6th grade science teachers Mrs. Foley and Mr. Edie, led the 6th-grade class through the "Build for Change: Playful School Challenge," fostering creativity and teamwork. Students worked in teams to design solutions for a more engaging school environment, building prototypes using LEGOs and presenting innovative ideas. Ms. McCarthy guided them every step of the way, encouraging critical thinking and collaboration.
To celebrate their hard work, Ms. McCarthy organized a field trip to Hollywood Blvd Cinema to watch Piece by Piece, a documentary about Pharrell Williams’ life and achievements. The film’s themes of resilience and creativity deeply resonated with the students, connecting their project to real-world inspiration. They left the theater motivated to make a difference in their own ways.
Ms. McCarthy, Mrs. Foley, and Mr. Edie’s efforts exemplify OLHMS’ commitment to meaningful, well-rounded education. By combining classroom projects with cultural experiences, they have inspired students to dream big and work together.
