Reach for the Stars: Global Space Week at OLHMS

Mustangs celebrated Global Space Week, held from October 4th to 10th, by exploring space science through hands-on projects and virtual missions. The annual event commemorates the launch of the first human-made satellite, Sputnik 1, in 1957 and the signing of the Outer Space Treaty in 1967. This international celebration seeks to inspire students, educators, and the public to engage with space exploration and understand its impact on our lives.

OLHMS Media Specialist, Ms. McCarthy, introduced the program to encourage her students to explore science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in new ways. “Global Space Week bridges the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications,” she explained. “It’s a chance for students to see how math, science, and technology work together in exciting ways.”

Throughout the week, students were immersed in space-themed lessons that go beyond traditional classroom learning. Activities included building rockets, rovers, and satellites using LEGOs, giving students a hands-on opportunity to grasp complex concepts. In addition, they are participating in the Global Space Challenge, a six-day virtual mission that tasks them with designing and running simulations for a mission to another planet in our solar system. As part of this challenge, students attend live events with space mission experts, including astronauts, engineers, and scientists. They also learned about careers in the space industry through Cosmic Career Chats.

“I liked how we created rovers to be used in space,” said Mia M. “I am interested in becoming an astronomer.”

“What I liked best was learning about STEM careers,” shared Zuri J, “I learned how meteorologists use data to report weather.”

Global Space Week has encouraged students to dream big and consider the vast possibilities of the universe. “Space exploration teaches perseverance, teamwork, and resilience,” Ms. McCarthy added. “It shows students that with dedication and curiosity, the impossible can be achieved.”
