District 123 and the Tinogona Foundation recently teamed up to host a “6K Walk for Literacy,” attracting participants from across the community to support global literacy efforts. The event, open to staff, students, families, and community members, drew an impressive 152 participants and raised over $3,000, with donations still coming in. Proceeds will go towards building a new library in Zimbabwe.
This initiative was inspired by Mrs. McCarthy’s recent trip to Zimbabwe, where she spent two weeks with Dr. Tererai Trent, an internationally renowned educator and humanitarian. During her visit, Mrs. McCarthy learned firsthand about Dr. Trent’s inspiring journey and the impact of her adopted schools in rural Zimbabwe. She returned eager to involve the District 123 community in supporting educational resources for students abroad.
The 6K walk was not just about fundraising but also about engaging the community. The Cruz brothers dominated the event, finishing in first and second place overall. Isabella Leahy was the fastest girl to cross the finish line and expressed her excitement about participating in the event. “I’m so happy that I got to run and have a first-place finish. I’m also happy to raise money for a great cause.”
Participants shared heartfelt reasons for joining the walk. Rayan H. said, “I loved that we got to run with our friends for a good cause. I believe that everyone deserves a library with books, so I am happy to help Africa.” Similarly, Naileah F. expressed her passion for literacy: “I love spending time in our library, so I want other kids to be able to experience the joy of libraries.”
The success of the 6K Walk for Literacy highlights the power of community and collective action to make a difference. With more donations expected, District 123 and the Tinogona Foundation are optimistic that they will reach their goal of providing students in Zimbabwe with a well-equipped library and the resources they need to thrive.
