8th Grade Walking Field Trip to the 9/11 First Responder Memorial

On the morning of Tuesday, September 11th, 2001, what began as an ordinary day quickly turned into an unimaginable and tragic chapter in history. Militants linked to the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four planes with the intent of launching targeted attacks across the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third struck the Pentagon near Washington, D.C., and the fourth crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in this horrific event.

At OLHMS, all 8th grade students were taken on a walking field trip with their Social Studies and Science teachers. Right behind the Oak Lawn Metro Station, our students walked to visit and see the four 22-foot steel beams from the World Trade Center at the 9/11 First Responder Memorial. Students were in awe and amazement. Evelyn stated that, “I’m so happy we had this opportunity- I had no idea there are actual pillars from 9/11 here. It’s important that we learn about our American history, and honor those that lost their life in this tragic event.” Thank you to Mrs. Georgelos, Mr. Mamolella, Mrs. Guerrero, and Ms. Foote for taking our 8th grade students on this amazing walking field trip!
