Ms. Nuhie Faheem, OLHMS Spanish teacher, was honored with the Award for Meritorious Service by the Illinois State Board of Education during the 49th annual “Those Who Excel and Teacher of the Year” awards banquet. She was nominated by her peers and students for this distinction.
8th grade students Grace M., Carsen W., Jayla J., Maggie S., Alayna M., Amar K., and Janeen M. wrote an essay and letter to the Illinois State Board of Education explaining why Ms. Faheem should earn this distinguished award. In their letter, these scholars wrote, “When in her class, we are always engaged, and excited to learn. She gives us great opportunities to learn, and work at a pace that works for students and helps them understand the material. She’s sympathetic, understanding, and caring. She is always there for her students no matter what, and makes us feel welcomed in the classroom.”
These students also shared stories and specific examples of Ms. Faheem’s contributions to the school, such as Quiz Bowl coordinator, Cheerleading Coach, International Fest Sponsor, and so much more. In the classroom, Ms. Faheem utilizes different pop culture elements to engage students such as sorting them into different Hogwarts Houses based on personality and using Latin music to teach lessons. Scholars stated, “Because of her high expectations, we are driven to success and have better chances in high school and beyond…we are lucky to have a teacher like her!”
Photographed with State Superintendent Dr. Tony Sanders, Ms. Faheem shared, “I am proud to represent my D123 colleagues, students, and the teaching profession. It was incredible being surrounded by other teachers from around the state of Illinois - the passion for empowering our youth and creating meaningful educational opportunities was palpable in the room. Upon receiving the award, State Superintendent Dr. Tony Sanders said “keep making a difference” - and that’s what I intend to do. Keeping making a difference for our students and our communities by creating safe spaces, legitimizing student narratives, fostering a sense of high standards and building authentic learning experiences that allow students to think creatively and critically.”
Congratulations to Ms. Nuhie Faheem on this incredible award!
