Last week, our OLHMS Girls Softball team made school history. The Mustangs killed the competition during the regular season with an 8-3 record and went into the playoffs earning the 4th seed. On Tuesday, October 4th, our Lady Mustangs played undefeated Evergreen Park in the semi-final game. Going into the 5th inning, OLHMS led 5-1 over undefeated Evergreen Park. But at the bottom of the 5th, Evergreen Park made a comeback, tying the score 5-5. At the top of the 7th, the OLHMS Mustangs had one out. Sophia S. had a single, then Clark Z. advanced the runner but was out at first. With two outs in the last inning, our Lady Mustangs had one last chance. Kamya F. came in clutch with a double to bring Clark home, making the score 6-5 in the bottom of the 7th. In the last attempt for Evergreen Park to clinch a win over our Lady Mustangs, Bella U. Pitched to three batters: a fly out to right fielder Mackenna S., a fly ball in deep center field to Clark Z., and a ground ball to Layla Kruse, who threw the ball to Kayla L. for the third and final out of the game. With a huge upset over Evergreen Park, the Lady Mustangs moved onto the Championship game right away.
In the 2022 SWIC Championship game, OLHMS took on Prairie View. Right off the bat, Prairie View hit a two run home run to start off the game strong. This type of play would usually frazzle a team, but not our Lady Mustangs. The Mustangs went on to score three runs in that same inning, and continued to rally with three more runs in the 2nd inning. Going into the 6th inning, the score was 6-3. Prairie View fought back and scored three more runs in the top of the 6th, tying the score at 6. When it was the Mustangs turn to bat again, they scored two more runs and took the lead again. Prairie View held their own and scored two more runs. With a tied score at 8, OLHMS needed one run to win the championship game. With one out, Maggie S. was walked, then Abby W. laid down the perfect bunt to advance Maggie to second and was able to be safe at first base. With runners on first and second, Sophia S. was walked, and Clark Z. Was up to bat with the bases loaded. With a 2-0 count, Clark launched the ball into deep center field, which brought Maggie in for the win.
Our Lady Mustangs put all of their heart and hard work not only into these last two games, but into their entire season. We are so proud of our Lady Mustangs for all of their hard work, dedication, and perseverance this season. GREAT SEASON, CHAMPIONS!!!
