Last Thursday, September 22nd, OLHMS held its first all school assembly in the main gym! Guest speaker Detective John Bonarek has been in law enforcement for the past 25 years, and he has been working as a Cyber Crimes Investigator for the last 19 years of his career. As a member of the Be Sure Consulting Cyber Training Team, Det. Bonarek has trained and informed countless students, parents, and members of the community on device safety.
At our OLHMS assembly, Det. Bonarek informed and empowered our students when it came to online activity. Students learned the importance of cyber bullying and how to report it; social media laws; the dangers of many popular apps; cyber-crime and that “no one online is anonymous;” protecting one’s “digital footprint” and what it means for their future; and how to report cyber crimes and harassment. 8th grade student Joli said she learned that, “you can’t trust anything you see online, and you should always be careful of what you post online.” Det. Bonarek also presented at our D123 Parent University night and informed our parents on ways they can empower and monitor their child’s social networks and gaming.
