Math Challenge Brings Learning to Life with Puzzles, Prizes, and a Pop-Up Store!

Students use math money to purchase rewards.

At Hometown, math just got a lot more exciting! Our monthly Math Challenge is in full swing, and students are diving into problem-solving like never before. This interactive event is designed to make math fun, hands-on, and rewarding!

Throughout the month, students are able to earn “Math Money” by solving rebus puzzles, completing logic games, and tackling a variety of other math-based challenges. Whether it’s decoding visual riddles or calculating their way through a scavenger hunt, every activity builds critical thinking skills while keeping students engaged.

But the fun doesn’t stop at solving math problems—students get to spend their hard-earned Math Money at a special Math Store run by our very own Math Support Teachers (MSTs) Mrs. Malone and Mrs. Finnegan! The store is stocked with exciting prizes such as math pencils, stickers, bracelets, rulers, measuring tapes and a variety of math games and  puzzles. Some students have been saving up their math bucks to purchase rewards like ice cream coupons, lunch and math games with Mrs. Malone and Mrs. Finnegan and our big reward - the end of year pizza party picnic at Mayor's Park.  Students are currently working on the April math challenge where they will have an opportunity to earn up to $50. Also look for two more rebus puzzle bonus challenges in April and May. There will be one more chance to visit the math store on May 23rd to purchase prizes and rewards.  From saving up for big-ticket items to budgeting for smaller treats, students are learning the value of their hard work in a real-world context.

The Math Store experience teaches:

Money management and budgeting
Decision-making and prioritizing
Delayed gratification vs. impulse spending
That math can be fun and rewarding!

So, if you hear students BUZZZZZZZing about their “Math Money” and puzzles this month, you’ll know why. The Math Challenge is more than just an event—it’s a celebration of learning that shows math is everywhere, and it can be a whole lot of fun!
