Kindergarten students at Hometown Elementary School wrapped up their recent reading unit in CKLA with a Native American feast. The event, held in the school’s cafeteria, was a celebration of both learning and culture, marking the end of a month-long exploration of Native American history, storytelling, and traditions.  The children, who had been learning about Native American tribes such as the Lakota Sioux, the Wampanoag and the Lenape.  As part of the curriculum, students learned about Native American symbols, art, and customs, which were integrated into activities throughout the unit. Students made their own totem poles, tipis and even moccosins. The highlight of the celebration was the musical performance, where children sang songs and used musical instruments inspired by Native Americans to perform songs for their guests.  “The students were so excited to invite their parents to come to see them perform and to enjoy a feast with them,” said Mrs. Gomez, a kindergarten teacher at Hometown Elementary. “It was a great way to bring the stories they’ve read to life and make this learning experience even more memorable.I love how much the kids have learned about Native American culture,” said one kindergarten parent. “It’s so important for them to learn about different cultures and traditions, especially in such an interactive and fun way.”  The event was a fitting conclusion to the students' reading unit in a hands-on way. The success of the Native American feast highlighted the importance of teaching children about diversity, history, and respect for different cultures.
