Second grade students at Hometown Elementary School are getting an early start on learning about the importance of service jobs in their community. As part of their social studies unit, students learned about different jobs such as firefighters, car mechanics, soldiers, nurses, police officers and pilots. Students performed skits about these service jobs to explain how these jobs help their town run smoothly.
This project was aimed to introduce children to different career paths and highlight the roles of workers in these service fields. "This project helped students appreciate the work that others do, whether it’s a pilot, a firefighter, or a mechanic,” said second grade teacher Mrs. Tully.
Students were placed into different groups and assigned a different service job to research. They used props such as animals for the zoo workers, stethoscopes for the doctors, fire hoses for the firefighters and even created their own plane using chairs and tickets .
One second grader pretended to be a firefighter putting out a fire in California. By learning about the people who serve their community, the second graders at Hometown Elementary learned an appreciation for hard work, responsibility, and community service.
