Tall Tales and Fairy Tales......

Tall Tales and Fairy Tales......

Paul Bunyan was ready to dig into his day!

Second graders had the most amazing time celebrating the end of their first unit in reading.  The unit was all about tall tales and fairy tales.  After reading stories such as "The Fisherman and His Wife," and "The Emperor’s New Clothes,"  they enjoyed hearing the classics such as "Beauty and the Beast," the tales of Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill, John Henry and Casey Jones.  Kids were invited to dress up as their favorite tall tale or fairy tale character and their teachers Mrs. Strelow, Mrs. Tully and Mrs. Ivers dressed up as their favorite characters too! The hallways were filled with little Belles and Paul Bunyans.  Students enjoyed mini flapjacks, Paul Bunyan’s favorite breakfast, and Babe the Blue Ox water. Kiddos chose from a variety of fairy tale and tall tale themed stickers. These were used to create a scene and then they wrote their own stories to go along with the illustration.  After some more fun they did a directed draw of Paul Bunyan.  As students review what they have learned and done, they remember experiences, synthesize information and determine which aspects are the most important during the unit and share with others. Culminating experiences also provide a sense of excitement that builds up leading to the culmination. This excitement can be seen not just in the students, but in the teachers as well. District 123 believes that knowledge is to be celebrated. Therefore, as students come to the end of the unit, we want to celebrate the new knowledge that we have gained!! One second grader beamed and said, "I've been waiting for this day forever!"
