A Day With Skates and The Chicago Wolves

Students completed questions in their Chicago Wolves workbook while watching the game.

On December 19, 2023 the Hometown fifth graders took a trip to the All State Arena in Rosemont, IL for a field trip to watch the Chicago Wolves hockey team take on the Mantoba Moose.  This interactive field trip provided each student with their own Chicago Wolves workbook that helped teach stdudents how  hockey relates to everyday classroom subjects such as math, science, language arts, reading and social studies.  For example, did you know during the entire time a game is being played, players can lose between five and eight pounds of body weight? This weight is mostly water, which is why a player drinks liquids on the bench to replenish his/her body!  Students also learned scientific facts about hockey.... they learned that the temperature of the ice during a game is 24° Fahrenheit (F) or -5° Celsius (C).

During the game, students needed to listen and pay attention to the jumbotron to hear Wolves defenseman Cavan Fitzgerald talk about the body and major muscles. They used this information to complete pages in their workbook about the Human Anatomy and how it relates to hockey.

This field trip provided an opportunity for some students to attend their first minor league hockey game.  One student said, "It was so fun to watch the game and be able to sit with my friends and have a fun morning."  Another student said the best part of the field trip was, "Watching the team skate on the ice.  They are amazing."

We would like to thank the Chicago Wolves Organization for providing this amazing field trip for our students.
