Have you ever thought, “Have I used math today?”
Hometown School has developed an exciting family math project that will last the entire school year. On the first Tuesday of each month, students will be bringing home a real-world math problem along with bonus fun math logic puzzles. Students and their families work together on the problem and return it to school. Once they return their project, they can return it and receive a certificate for a free ice cream or Smencil. Students also get to bring their lunch to “Munch and Math Games” with the math teachers on the last Monday of the month. Students who complete at least eight projects will be rewarded with an end-of-year field trip and pizza party!
Research has proven that projects motivate students to gain knowledge and help them remember it longer. They also allow students to apply the skills they learn in school to personally relevant, real-world situations. Children also learn to think critically, solve problems, work as a team, and present their work. These skills will help them succeed in the future, both in school and in today’s work world. These projects are designed to be open-ended, fun, and engaging for the whole family to help students recognize how we use math in our everyday lives. “The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics.” -Paul Hamos.
