This week, students in all grades will begin implementation of the Second Step SEL (Social Emotional Learning) curriculum. Research has proven that children need social-emotional skills to thrive both in the classroom and in life. Our second step program teaches children techniques to:
- Gain confidence
- Set goals
- Make better decisions
- Collaborate with others in work and play
- Navigate the world more effectively
Every week, students participate in a lesson where the teacher explains a concept with words, pictures, video, and/or audio. The lower grades incorporate the lovable Puppy and Snail in the lessons as well. Students practice the concept through skill practice, group discussion, individual writing, or partner work.
Students look forward to Second Step each week and love to practice techniques like belly breathing, problem solving and more with their peers.
