First-grade students at Hannum Elementary recently wrapped up their Early Civilizations Unit in the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum with a series of hands-on, creative projects. As a culmination of their learning about the Maya, Aztec, and Inca civilizations, students explored ancient art forms by making Mayan mosaic masks, Aztec dragons, and Inca pottery using playdough.
These activities allowed students to connect with history in an engaging and meaningful way, reinforcing their understanding of these great civilizations’ cultures, traditions, and artistry. Through their colorful mosaic masks, they discovered the intricate designs of Mayan artwork, while their Aztec dragons showcased the mythical creatures often depicted in ancient stories. Finally, shaping and decorating Inca-inspired pottery gave them insight into the craftsmanship of one of South America’s most advanced societies.
The culminating projects not only highlighted students’ creativity but also deepened their appreciation for the rich history of early civilizations. Hannum’s young historians certainly made the past come alive through their artistic efforts!
