5th grade Math Enrichment students comparing fractions as part of a March Madness unit.
March Madness has arrived in our 5th grade Math Enrichment class, bringing a full-court press of mathematical excitement! Mrs. Estand kicked off the unit by exploring basics of basketball and the many types of data that can be collected during a game. Students also learned about the history of March Madness and the facinating probability behind picking the perfect bracket.
Using a bracket-style completition, they compared fractions to determine which was the largest-and were surprised when the initial predictions did not match the final results. Over the next few weeks, these young statiticians will take game stats from real footage, compare their personal performance to their favorite basketball players, build their own teams while managing a budget, and create their own brackets after Selection Sunday.
We can't wait to see their math skills in action as they track the 2025 tournament! Stay tuned for more updates as our Math Madness continues!!
