On Monday, Hannum School surprised PE teacher Mike Fanjoy with an unexpected honor: the Chicago Bears Classroom Legend Award. Mr. Fanjoy was nominated for this accolade by a colleague from another school. Last week, Mr. Lazzaratto informed the staff about Mr. Fanjoy's award, revealing that Bears chairman George McCaskey, great-grandson of Bears founder George Halas, would present it to him at Hannum.
In anticipation of the event, staff and students were encouraged to wear Bears spirit wear and creative tactics were employed to keep Mr. Fanjoy out of the gym while students gathered for the surprise assembly. Joining Mr. McCaskey was former Bears offensive lineman Big Steve Edwards, who played from 2002-2005. The Bears organization awarded Mr. Fanjoy a check for $1000 to be used for PE equipment, Bears tickets to this Sunday's game in the Skybox against the New England Patriots and a signed football.
Overwhelmed with gratitude, Mr. Fanjoy was celebrated by his wife, children, family, and entire Hannum School community for well-deserved recognition. Additionally, Mr. McCaskey took the time to read three books to the second graders: The Tale of Custard the Dragon, More Bears, and The Book with No Pictures. His engaging storytelling made for an unforgettable day for the students. Go Bears!!!
