Earlier this year fifth grade students studied Early American Civilizations and on Friday they were able to see real artifacts from these people close at hand at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. The focus of the unit was that large complex civilizations, including those of the Maya, Aztec, and Inca, developed in the Americas before the arrival of Europeans. Students studied the geography, climate, flora, and fauna of the Americas. Students also learned an overall history and timeline highlighting the rise and fall of the Maya, Aztec, and Inca civilizations along with innovations and discoveries of the Maya, Aztec, and Inca and myths from these ancient civilizations. Fifth graders were able to explore thousands of artifacts including pottery, statues, videos in each major gallery, and learn from serveral interactive displays.
