“Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another and feeling with the heart of another.” – Alfred Adler
Last week, Hannum Elementary, as well as the other schools in District 123, celebrated Empathy Week. Throughout the school year, students discuss empathy through our Second Step curriculum. Using different scenarios, students learn how to understand others feelings. They even learn a song about empathy! On the week of May 8th, teachers took some time to give students an "empathy refresher." Not only was empathy discussed in the classrooms, but students participated in spirit days that were centered around empathy. Pajama day made everyone feel comfortable about being themselves and Hawaiian Day celebrated how everyone is different, like a flower. Our most popular spirit day was Twin Day, a day used to discover our similarities with one another. The kids were so excited to dress like their friends and their teachers. It was great seeing so many smiling faces throughout Hannum and it was definitely a "twin"ning day!
