Though ELA, math, science, and social studies are core subjects at Hannum Elementary, we also put a big emphasis on social/emotional learning. Along with Second Step lessons taught weekly in each class, our school counselor, Miss Turek, pulls small groups weekly. These groups are called friendship groups. Students are randomly selected by Miss Turek to come together once a week for 6 weeks. Miss Turek recently asked her 5th grade friendship group to visualize their calming spots. Students then created these “peaceful snapshots.” Not only do these groups help students learn vital skills on how to deal with their feelings and emotions but students learn how to socialize and they are able to get to know one another.
