Third grade students at Hannum Elementary spent the month of November studying the Macy's Day Thanksgiving Parade and its creator, Tony Sarg. Students began the month by reading Balloons Over Broadway. They learned about the successes and failures of the parade and how the make-up of the balloons has changed over time. Students were then tasked with creating balloons of their own, along with a device to hold their balloon during the parade. A parade took place before Thanksgiving break, which allowed the third grade students to show off their amazing creations to the entire school!
This activity was a project based learning experience that not only allowed students to tap into their creativity, but had students working on social studies, reading skills, and engineering skills.
