Student Nominated for Technology Award

Jawaan Black from Miss Zouras’ room at Hometown School was recently nominated by staff for a Student Technology Award through the Infinitec Southwest Assistive Technology Coalition Center.

He received a Certificate of Excellence and a McDonald’s gift certificate in recognition of the exceptional progress that he has made in using technology.

“We are very pleased that Jawaan received this special recognition for his hard work and growing independence in using technology-based supports in order to communicate.  Jawaan is truly beginning to find his voice through the use of his augmentative and alternative communication device,” said Janet Kennedy an AT specialist at District 123.

Jawaan currently uses a Nova Chat 8 communication device in order to communicate as he has Autism and is not currently able to use verbal speech.

District 123 is part of the Infinitec Southwest Coalition which is an assistive technology coalition between schools and the United Cerebral Palsy of Chicago organization.  Each year the coalition recognizes outstanding student achievement in using assistive technology.
