Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 adheres to Illinois State Enhanced P.E. standards. These standards correlate directly to the health and well-being of students for the rest of their lives. The Enhanced PE fitness standards also have cognitive benefits, too, making students more receptive to the learning happening in classrooms each day.

“It is important for our students to be active throughout the school day. The goal of everyday Physical Education is to instill the importance of being active and living a healthy style. As physical education teachers, it is our hope that our students are gaining knowledge and in turn understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle outside of school. Not only are our students active while are in class, they are learning social skills; communication, teamwork, cooperation, problem-solving which are all needed in their everyday life,” said Renee Ziobro, a Physical Education Teacher in Oak Lawn-Hometown District 123.

There is a significant body of research showing that children who are more physically active perform better in class and on standardized assessments. Improving opportunities for physical activity within District 123 is imperative for improving our children’s academic achievement as well as their health.
