Sward kindergarten teacher, Carey Jensen got quite the surprise when she thought she was heading into the school’s Fall pep assembly. Turns out it wasn’t an assembly for Fall fun but for Jensen as she has been named a 2018 “Symetra Hero in the Classroom”.

“I am just in complete shock, I haven’t stopped shaking,” said Jensen.

Jensen was nominated by her peers, Letitia Katalinic, Jennifer Coennen, and Abigail Derus for her commitment to students in and out of the classroom.

“Not only is Carey and excellent kindergarten teacher but she also volunteers her time as a student council sponsor. Every year she works with the 4th and 5th graders to put together charity events and donation drives for Paws, and local food pantries to donate food. She just always gets the school excited and involved to give back to their community,” said Derus.

Out of thousands of applicants across northern Illinois, Symetra and the Bears Organization unanimously chose Jensen as one of the 16 winners of a $2,000 donation to her classroom, a personalized Bears Jersey, a signed football and Bears tickets with field access to the pregame practice! Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky also appeared via video message to thank Jensen for her hard work as an inspiring teacher.

“This is just a surreal experience I am so thankful to my colleagues and all the students I have now and in the past. I just really appreciate the nominations and I just cannot say thank you enough for all of this,” said Jensen.

Jensen will appear on the big screen as a “Symetra Hero in the Classroom” during the Bears game on October 21 when they face the Patriots at home.
