District 123 Principal announced to ASCD leadership position

Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School Assistant Principal, Laura Ferrell has been announced as the future Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development Emerging Leader Alumni Affiliate President. Ferrel, an education leader and active emerging leader, brings 17 years of educational experience to the role.

“Educators are the makers of what’s next, and that is exactly what is happening for our ASCD Emerging Leader Alumni via this new affiliate structure. Emerging Leaders are a unique set of people with an incredible amount of expertise. I’m excited to help lead opportunities for us to build something incredible together,” explains Ferrell. “As reflective practitioners, while it is important to honor our past, it is also critical to embrace our future.”

The goal of the Emerging Leader Alumni Affiliate is to extend a network of support and opportunity for emerging leaders, leverage areas of expertise to strengthen ASCD’s areas of focus, and to support existing local affiliates while building leadership capacity for affiliate members. Dedicated graduates of the program have been informally creating strategic networks through emerging leader connections, but ELASCD hopes to formalize and reinforce these efforts.

Ferrell is in her sixth year as assistant principal at Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School. Her previous roles include elementary and middle school classroom teacher and instructional technology coach. In her current role, she serves to continually develop the use of practical assessments, increase family engagement and communication while ensuring best practices around trauma-informed instruction and system-wide technological fluency.

Ferrell has been an active member of the Emerging Leader cohort since 2014, as well as a member of her local ASCD chapter, ILASCD. As she completes her doctoral work in educational leadership this fall, Ferrell plans to increase her presence at conferences and other ASCD events, while maintaining an ever-important connection to the community.
