Twenty-six ladies from Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School recently made their way to a special event at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais. The Society of Women Engineers hosted “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” hoping to stir up interest in STEM education and careers. Students participated in various inquiry-based activities and worked with female Engineering students.
The women of the ONU program helped the girls understand what engineers do, illustrated the ever-expanding roles for women in STEM careers, and gave the girls the opportunity to interact with an engineering role model to get their questions answered.
“The girls Engineering day was a great way to start building confidence in the young woman to the many aspects of engineering and how to enjoy a career in a STEM field. The interaction and fun activities provided the ladies with a wealth of knowledge that they can take with them as they further their education,” said Maggie Omiecinski, an OLHMS Teacher.
